Classes for youth and adults

Classes begin January 25th &

Dance Classes

(FEE: $5.00 drop in/or $50 for Spring session)

Introduction to Ballet and Modern with Allie Berger

Mondays 5-6pm (Ages 8-10)

This class will focus on the basic concepts and movement vocabulary of Modern Dance, however we will also learn about its origins in Ballet.  Students will learn classic body positions and will practice combining them in pieces of choreography.

Beginner Flamenco with Camille Erice

Tuesdays 5-6PM (Ages 5-10)

Learn the traditional Spanish style of dance with

Danzante’s founder and master Flamenco dancer, Camille Erice.

Beginning Ballet/Creative Movement with Allie Berger

Wednesday 4-5PM (Ages 5-6)

Targeted toward younger beginning dancers, this class will provide a creative introduction to dance movement through imaginative and playful exercises.  They will also be introduced to some basic Ballet positions and terms in preparation for further dance study.

Advanced Flamenco with Camille Erice

Wednesdays 5-6PM (Ages 11+)

Advanced youth Flamenco dancers may sign up for this youth dance

ensemble.  Rehearsals are every Wednesday with local guitarist

John Catalano.

Modern Dance with Improvisation and Composition w/Allie Berger

Wednesdays 5-6 (Ages 7-9)

Students in this class will learn basic skills required for Modern Dance.  They will also have the opportunity to contribute ideas and help create dances of their own.

Hip Hop & Pop Dance with Andi Oyler (Begins February 11, 2010)

Thursdays 5-6 (Ages 7-18)

Shake, Break, Bounce!  This up-beat and fun Hip Hop class is designed around Hip Hop and Pop music.  We will explore different styles of Hip Hop and create different ways to move the body to the music!

Tropical Dance with Ms. Andrea Morato-Lara (Begins Feb 4, 2010)

Thursdays 6-7 (Ages 14 – 99+)

Learn to dance all styles of Latin and Tropical dance, including Salsa, Rueda, Cumbia, Merengue and other popular dance styles.

Culture Classes

Hip Hop & Breakin’ w/ Zulu Queen Michele Hairston & BBoy Brooklyn

Tues & Thurs 5-6pm (Ages 8 – 18)

Breakin/Break-Dancing class with guest coaches throughout the Spring program.  Students will learn the fundamentals and foundation of break dancing.  Participants are encouraged to participate in off- sight events.  Students will be eligible to participating in events based on consistent attendance, positive attitude and behavior.

FEE: $5.00 drop in/ $50 for session.

Creative Writing/Poetry

Introduction to Writing/Poetry Class with Sahithi Muddasani

Mondays & Wednesdays 5-6 (Ages 8 to 11)

January 25 – May 24, 2010

Students will express their creativity through short story writing and poetry. They will be exposed to a variety of authors from around the world. We will also explore basic poetic structures, and simple poetry forms. The main focus of the class is to generate ideas for writing through games and brainstorming, as well as developing an understanding of the emotions and thoughts that cause us to write.

FEE: $ 5.00 drop in or $50.00 for Spring Session.

Visual Art Classes

Introduction to Drawing with Alissa Walsh January 25 – May 24, 2010

Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays 5-6 (Ages 7+)

Students will be exposed to a variety of artists and their styles of painting and drawing.  Participants will develop their style through work on life drawing with a model, self portraits, cartooning, story-telling, and movement drawing.

FEE: $5.00 drop in/$50.00 for entire Spring Session

Photography Projects with Matthew Murray

Students will learn to develop digital photography skills and basic editing and critique, while asking the question “WHY.”  Through these classes, students will be asked to observe different aspects of their community with the camera, and have the opportunity to show their work at public events.

FEE: $1.00 drop in/$100.00 (refundable) deposit for use of camera.

Recycled Arts Workshop/Classes with Ms. Karen Lee

Students will learn to re-use materials to make beautiful, functional art.

Music Classes

Beginner to Intermediate Guitar with Adam Sulvetti

January 25 – May 27, 2010

Monday – Thursday 6-7pm (Ages 7+)

½ hour lesson, 1-4 days per week (by appointment)

Students will work one on one with teacher for instruction.  Group theory workshops will be scheduled periodically. Guitar classes would be a complete study of the notes, learning chords & chord diagrams, finger exercises to promote flexibility and faster response time, and some discussion on theory at the most basic level.  Students will be expected to practice outside the lesson.

African Percussion with Clint Daub (Begins March 1st)

Mondays (Ages 5-8)

Tuesdays (Ages 8+)

Students will learn traditional West African rhythms as they develop technique and listening skills.  Class leads to performance.

The Art of DJ’ing with DJ Magic (March – May)

Tuesdays & Wednesdays 5-6pm (Ages 14-18)

Introduction to DJ’ing.  Learning to buy equipment, installing and playing, mixing, promotions, etc.

FEE: $5.00 drop in/$50.00 for session.
